Outlaws take step up to APFL When the Mid-Missouri Outlaws joined the Central Plains Football League three years ago, head coach and starting linebacker Travis Jobe expected the team to compete from day one.
Pitted against the best semi-pro teams in the area, the Sedalia-based Outlaws did more than just compete — they put their stamp on the arena-style CPFL with three straight championships, compiling a 31-3 league record and a 33-3 mark overall.
Mid-Missouri’s dominance reached its peak last season as the Outlaws finished 12-0 in the league, followed by statement wins against two heavy hitters outside the league.
After an impressive 62-35 win over the Independence Bulldogs completed their CPFL campaign, the Outlaws traveled to face the American Professional Football League and Great Lakes Football champions in back-to-back contests.
The Outlaws shined against the two elite teams, defeating the APFL Iowa Blackhawks in a 54-49 barn-burner, followed up by a 33-13 win over the East Central Missouri Eagles.
The victories made an indelible mark on the Outlaws, giving the team a taste of better football, played on a grander scale. The hard-fought victory over the Blackhawks came in front of 10,000 fans, and the seed was planted for the Outlaws to move from semi-pro to professional football. Click title to continue article |

Outlaws(CPFL) plunder Blackhawks(APFL) of win The Mid-Missouri Outlaws rallied from a 35-0 deficit Saturday night to stun the Iowa Blackhawks 54-49 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
“I can’t believe it,” Outlaws coach Travis Jobe said. “I knew we were good enough to play with them. ... We were a little shell-shocked at the start. The speed of the game’s a little faster. They’ve got pro athletes. They get paid and practice three times a week. We don’t practice because of everybody’s jobs.”
The Outlaws (11-0) began their comeback in the second quarter, scoring 22 points before halftime.

Outaws(CPFL) Beat the Iowa Blackhawks(APFL) in a non-league game Although it seemed unlikely at the outset, the battle of the unbeatens lived up to its pregame billing Saturday at the Mid-America Center.
The Iowa Blackhawks, leaders of the American Professional Football League, scored on their first five possessions and led 35-0 yet fell to Central Plains Football League champion Mid-Missouri 54-49 when the Outlaws stopped 235-pound running back Mell Holliday on first-and-goal at the 1 as time expired.
Iowa (5-1) jumped on top Saturday when Marque McCray hauled in a 28-yard touchdown reception from Chuck Wright on the third play from scrimmage. Holliday added a pair of first-half rushing TDs as the Blackhawks built a 35-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the game.
At that point, Mid-Missouri had one turnover and had managed only a single yard of total offense. However, the Outlaws found their offensive groove midway through the second and outscored Iowa 54-14 over the final 2 1/2 quarters to improve to 11-0. "We’ve been down like this before," Mid-Missouri quarterback Kyle Middleton said. "Granted this is a completely better league, but we’ve got some true champions on the team. They knew we could battle back. We knew our offense was going to put up points, and our defense was the best in our league. We knew they were going to make a stop there."
Middleton threw a pair of scoring passes and rushed for another to pull the Outlaws to within 35-22 at the half. A 10-yard interception return for a TD by Antoine Stewart with 7:58 left in the third cut the Iowa lead to 42-36, and Mid-Missouri was seemingly going to have a chance to tie or move in front when Stewart scooped up a Holliday fumble at the goal line and started racing the other way. ..... Blackhawks(APFL) vs Outlaws(CPFL) Pregame Mike Wolff can see the benefits of a bye week in the middle of a rugged season as much as any other football coach. But considering the way his unbeaten Iowa team had played thus far in 2009, he’s not sure a break is what the Blackhawks really needed. While he appreciates the opportunity for his players to heal their war wounds, he can’t help but wonder if they can regain the momentum they had before the recent break in their schedule. Iowa enters tonight’s 7:05 game against Mid-Missouri at the Mid-America Center with a perfect 5-0 record in American Professional Football league play. But Wolff is concerned about whether his team can pick up where it left off when it hosts the Central Plains Football League-champion Outlaws, who recently capped a 10-0 season of their own with a third consecutive league title...... Mustangs(CPFL) got a last minute call to travel to Topeka. Took 14 guys After watching his team suffer its second loss of the season to the Iowa Blackhawks last week, Kansas Koyotes coach Jim Green knew his team needed to bounce back Saturday night at Landon Arena, no matter who it was playing.
The fact that they were matched up against a fill-in team that suited up just 14 players made it a little easier for Green and the Koyotes to accomplish that task.
Kansas put up 44 points in the first quarter en route to a dominating 84-38 victory against the Missouri Mustangs, a team from the Central Plains Football League who showed up in place of the Florida Scorpions. ..... Click on title to read more

Outlaws win CPFL title The Mid-Missouri Outlaws have won their second Central Plains Football League championship.
The Outlaws beat the Independence Bulldogs 49-30 in the title game on Saturday in Independence, giving them back-to-back championships in the first two seasons of the CPFL.
The league expanded from four teams to eight this season and saw Mid-Missouri, which went undefeated last year, lose a pair of games. The Outlaws (11-2) fell to the third seed in the playoffs and had to play a wild-card game while the top two seeds enjoyed first-round byes.
“It was an awesome season,” said Travis Jobe, co-owner of the Outlaws. “It’s such a long season. Gosh dang 13 games, it’s almost an NFL season. ... I think this was maybe a little more sweet than last time just because of suffering two losses during the season, being the No. 3 seed and having to go through the wild card and all that stuff.”........ |

Outlaws set for championship game The road had more bumps in it, but the Mid-Missouri Outlaws are back in the same position as a year ago — playing for the Central Plains Football League championship.
The Outlaws travel to play for the title against the Independence Bulldogs at 5 p.m. today at the Pop Warner Field in Independence. Admission is $5 for anyone 16 and over.
“We’ve endured a lot more this year,” said Travis Jobe, co-owner of the Outlaws. “This year, we’ve had a lot more games plus the competition has stepped up a ton this year than what we had last year.”
The Outlaws (10-2) beat the Missouri Mustangs in the final seconds of the CPFL championship game last year — when the league had just four teams. The league added four teams this year — including the Bulldogs — and Jobe said this year’s game could be just as thrilling.
The teams split the regular-season series, each winning on their home field........ |

The Outlaws pushed their record to 4-0 as they scored on all four first-half possessions on the way to a 54-0 win.
After jumping out to a 28-0 lead at halftime, the Outlaws rotated many players into the game who seldom see action. Outlaws co-owner Chad Jackson saw that as a positive for his team.
“The biggest thing was that we got a lot of players in today that usually don’t get to play,” said Jackson. “A team is only as good as their bench, and we were able to get a lot of players in today. It’s going to make us better down the way, especially when we play teams the caliber of the Bulldogs of Independence and the Missouri Mustangs.” |

Minor league football team has Western flavor The professional football season may be over, but it marks the beginning for arena league and semi-pro football teams such as the St. Joe Ravens, whose season started last month.
The St. Joe Ravens are a semi-professional, eight on eight football ball team that play on an outdoor field, as opposed to playing indoors in an arena. They belong to the CPFL, or Central Plains Football League and have been around the area for years.
Unfortunately, not too many people are familiar with the CPFL, or even knew the St. Joe Ravens even existed. To the many that do not get a chance to play college football, the St. Joe Ravens may be your alternative. |
